Event Description
Mindfulness, yoga, and meditation are hot topics today in the mental health field including eating disorder treatment. Incorporating mindfulness and movement into the treatment and recovery process is beneficial for clients for multiple reasons, including exploring new forms of exercise, engaging different parts of the brain, and strengthening mindfulness skills. In this experiential presentation, we will explore how using trauma-informed yoga and beginning mindfulness exercises is a helpful tool for clients with eating disorders. We will also review primary attitudes of mindfulness to conceptualize and practice, seven core competencies of trauma-informed yoga based on the EMPOWER acronym, and learn how to identify and properly handle potential trauma responses that arise while developing increased sensitivity for triggers. You will also walk away with practical breathing and meditation exercises to begin using with clients right away! Objectives: 1. Participants will practice mindfulness techniques to incorporate their clinical practice in order to better guide the clients into managing their maladaptive thoughts and behaviors throughout the recovery process. 2. Participants will be able to understand and apply the 7 core competencies of trauma-informed yoga to an eating disordered client population by using the EMPOWER acronym (Marich and Sowers, 2016.) 3. Participants will learn awareness and sensitivity to clients that have experienced trauma, and be prepared to identify and effectively work through potential triggers that may arise in session. Presented by Ryan Steedly, MA, LPC (Bio available online)
