Event Description

It can be persuasively argued that effective service is impossible without a working knowledge and understanding of a person’s or group’s culture and background. If we fail to acknowledge the influence of the lived-experience of culture on the work that we do, we limit our ability to build rapport and effectively work with our clients. The term cultural competence is used to describe a set of values, principles, and skills that address an understanding of, and respect for, our diverse clients and their families. Cultural competence is having an awareness of one’s own cultural identity and views about difference, and the ability to learn and build on the varying cultural and community norms of our client populations. Learning Outcomes By the end of the session participants will be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the Person- in -Environment framework in understanding cultural competence, especially as it relates to issues of diversity and oppression. 2. Recognize the importance of self-awareness in cultural competence to moderate the influence of personal biases and values in working with diverse individuals and groups. 3. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic skills of cross-cultural service delivery and the importance of difference in shaping life experiences, especially as it relates to cultural humility. Presenter Gwendolyn Rees, MSW, LISW-S has over sixteen years of experience working with adults and adolescents in both the not-for-profit and private sectors. She has supervised social workers in case management, behavioral health, and medical settings. Gwendolyn is a therapist in private practice and a Full-Time Community Lecturer at The Ohio State University College of Social Work. She is a training facilitator on various topics related to the profession of Social Work as well as other clinical and social service fields. Her approach as a presenter is much like her approach clinically and in the classroom--- eclectic, engaging, and collaborative.
