Event Description

This 6 hour training is designed to help practitioners understand fundamental concepts underlying the treatment of sexually aggressive youth. It outlines basic concepts used in treatment with sexualIy aggressive youth as well as identifying factors to consider in individualizing treatment with this population. Indications and contraindications for various approaches are discussed within the context of factors presented by the client and influencing the sexually aggressive behavior. Treatment goals for working with this population are outlined. Techniques and approaches for addressing these goals are presented and discussed, including the use of homework assignments. It further provides some basic techniques for addressing resistance and denial. Content areas for treatment goals include safety planning, supervision, healthy sexual identity and behaviors, factors contributing to sexually aggressive behavior, victim empathy and victim impact, and relapse prevention planning. Because successful treatment involves the internalization of skills by the sexual aggressor, emphasis will be placed on approaches that help youth to internalize skills effectively and decrease risks for further sexual acting out. Lecture, discussion, and case examples will be utilized in presentation of this material.
