Event Description

Couples and marital therapy is very challenging work. Traditional problem-focused approaches often result in therapy that is stuck in the couple re-enacting their conflicts in the office. To move beyond this focus on conflict, a Strengths-Based Approach emphasizes the romantic attraction that brought the couple together, ways in which the· couple balance or complement each other, and how the couple has grown through the challenges of life together. Through a better understanding of the role of early attachment patterns and how these are repeated and worked through with the partner, stronger attachment and emotional safety in the marriage can be promoted. The importance of a committed stance from the therapist toward rebuilding a good relationship is crucial. Many case examples will be presented in this program through lecture, role-playing vignettes, and partner clinical exercises. Dr. Christine Elliott is a Licensed Psychologist in independent practice at LifeStream, LLC, in Hudson, Ohio. She obtained her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Case Western Reserve University. She has taught graduate students in Clinical Psychology at Case Western Reserve University as an adjunct professor, and at John Carroll University as a Lecturer in the Department of Counseling. Dr. Elliott works with individuals, couples, and families using a variety of treatment approaches including Emotion-Focused Couples Therapy, Attachment-Based methods, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and EMDR. Her clinical interests include intensive skill development in couples’ therapy and integrating spirituality into psychotherapy. She regularly leads training seminars at John Carroll University and EMERGE Counseling. Dr. Elliott also consults and leads Strategic Planning for agencies and private practices.
