Event Description
From the time we began to learn what it meant to be a helping professional we were challenged to become culturally competent. We understood that a first step was exploring our individual culture and values as well as our beliefs and assumptions about other cultures. We came to know this was an ongoing process. The presenter will share personal experiences of living in South Asia as well as insights about working in social/mental health services in Western and Eastern cultures including how culture influences a personā€˜s view of mental health, whether or not that person seeks help and from whom they might seek help. Participants in this training will have the opportunity to explore a variety of elements of culture, will gain understanding of how assumptions, beliefs, and expectations impact the therapeutic relationship and process, and enhance their knowledge of culturally responsive interventions.
