Event Description
This workshop with help Psychologists to understand: (i) the telemental health practice; (ii) basic ethical issues arising from it; (iii) HIPAA regulation regarding online work; (iv) differences between online vs. offline interactions and the ethical implications of this; (v) information release and potential ethical decisions and relevant tools that can be used; and (vi) best practices related to psychiatric referral. Telemedicine offers an important change in the delivery of care, by allowing patients to see their psychotherapists remotely and online. However, as with any other type of care, patients and therapists need to build a relationship of trust, in which the therapist will always act in the patients' best interest. Even though the ethical principles remain the same, the different types of interaction between patients & psychotherapists give rise to different questions regarding the ethical responsibility. This course will discuss the fundamental fiduciary obligations a provider needs to have vis-a-vis its patients. The workshop will use interactive teaching techniques and each participant will be encouraged to participate from the basis of his or her own field experience and insights.
