The Ohio Psychological Association would like to offer our support for all those affected by the shooting in Dayton, El Paso, and Gilroy, during the past few tumultuously violent days. Our Association reflects on the friends and family of those killed and injured, those who witnessed the event or helped in the aftermath, and those affected by the news of this unspeakable loss, particularly and now acutely experienced within our own state.

During this time, while we appreciate that anger, fear, and grief are natural responses to these events, we hope that each person may also find some comfort and a safe harbor in the circle of friends, family, and community that surrounds them. As many continue to seek answers for these mass shooting events, noting the influence of hate, racial bias, eschewing diversity, we also are reminded, as psychologists, stereotyping and scapegoating mental illness are not a part of this same understanding.

Pain and trauma continue after two mass shootings within hours of each other this weekend in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. The Dayton shooting marks the 250th shooting of the year, in a year that we have only experienced 150 days thus far. The magnitude of this has left many feeling shocked, scared, and experiencing concern for our country and civilians.

Saturday morning in El Paso, 20 people were killed and 26 injured when a gunman opened fire at a shopping center. On Sunday, a gunman opened fire on civilians leaving 9 dead and many injured, in a popular nightlife district in downtown Dayton, Ohio. The Dayton shooting was the fourth similar incident across the country this past week.

Points to consider relative to gun violence and gun control:

•	The US has by far the highest rates of gun ownership in the world
•	The US has the highest rate of gun homicides among advanced countries
•	Even as gun ownership increases, gun violence in the long term is declining
•	Ex post facto explanations and an excess of false positives make predicting mass shooters difficult
•	Performance violence enacted in the pursuit of fame is an important factor in public mass shootings
•	The vast majority of people with mental illness are not violent
•	The perception that mental illness causes unpredictable violence has been particularly perpetuated by media coverage of mass shootings

FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT www.theviolenceproject.org

We are opening up a Virtual Memorial, in the form of a live blog. The Virtual Memorial allows us to discuss these attacks and the effects on us personally and professionally within the psychology community. Please use our live blog below to share or process any thoughts or feelings you have about these incidents. You can also share resources for clinicians, or ways to show support to others through this time of tragedy in our country.

To support the victims and families of the El Paso TX, and Dayton shootings, please visit the Public Good Campaign via link below.

https://impact.publicgood.com/campaign/d974f44d-9d2d-4b13-86cc-04b4f140f14b?location=&title=How%20you%20can%20help%20victims%20of%20the%20mass%20shootings%20in%20El%20Paso%20&utm_content=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.www-m.cnn.com%2Fpreview%2Fworkspace-burnsteinb%2Farticle_7CF5A96A-7727-6462-74EB-5CA63E77D87D%3Ftype%3Darticle%26storytype%3Dstory%26section%3Dhealth%26r%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fcms3-mobile-preview.api.cnn.io%252F&utm_medium=button&utm_source=cnn
