OPA Workshop Presenter Application

OPA’s Education Committee strives to offer a variety of programs including workshops, discussions and current research through January-August of each year. Equal consideration is given to all submissions. As an American Psychological Association (APA) approved provider, OPA follows APA guidelines for workshop criteria and quality. Presenters may be eligible for CE hours for presenting.

Diversity and Multiculturalism
Cultural competency courses must develop the participant’s knowledge, awareness, skills and capacity to identify, to understand, and to respect the multicultural and diverse aspects of populations. These aspects include race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, socioeconomic status, and religious/spiritual orientation. Cultural aspects refer to a population’s unique beliefs, values, customs, languages, abilities, and traditions.

Interaction and Handouts
OPA also supports programs that allow for the interaction of participants and address cutting edge research or create discussion or thought. Presenters are required to use handouts and—where appropriate—use interactive training techniques.

Quality of OPA Workshops

OPA-CE standards require that all courses be:

  • pertinent to the theory, practice and methodology of psychology
  • taught at the post-licensure level/graduate level, and
  • enable a psychologist to provide better psychological care to the consumer.

Ethics, Cultural Competency & Professional CONDUCT Requirement

Psychologists must complete 23 hours of continuing education in a biennium, with 4 of those hours in ethics / cultural competency / professional conduct. This 4 hour ethics/cultural competency/professional conduct requirement goes into effect 9-1-2014. You will still only need 23 CE total, but those hours must include any combination of ethics / cultural competency / professional conduct coursework equaling 4 CE.

Any of the following meet the criterion for approval of an ethics/cultural competency/professional conduct course by the OPA-MCE office that will count towards the four (4) hours of ethics/cultural competency/professional conduct mandated for license renewal. {amended ORC 4732.141(2)}

CAUTION: Workshops applying for ethics / cultural competency / professional conduct credit must have associated learning objectives that clearly indicate a focus on ethics / cultural competency / professional conduct. Also, note that these topics need to be dealt with throughout the workshop. It is not acceptable to deal with ethics, cultural competency or professional conduct for only part of the workshop.
