The National Register of Health Service Psychologists proudly presented a 2026 SPTA Advocacy Award to the Ohio Psychological Association.

This award is presented annually to State, Provincial, and Territorial Psychological Associations (SPTAs) to honor excellence in advocacy.

April D. Fernando, PhD, member of the National Register Board of Directors and Chair of the National Register’s SPTA Advocacy Award Committee, said of the Ohio State Psychological Association: “The Committee was incredibly impressed with the results of OPA’s advocacy work to secure state funding for their pilot project to attract top interns to Ohio and establish the state’s first doctoral internship program in all six of state-run psychiatric hospitals. We were equally impressed with their efforts to successfully reform the insurance practice of skimming 3-5% off the top of ETF reimbursements to health and behavioral health providers. Truly remarkable accomplishments – congratulations to OPA!”

After receiving notice of the award, Dustin J. McKee, Chief Executive Officer of the Ohio Psychological Association, stated, “We are honored to receive the SPTA Advocacy Award from the National Register. Psychologists in Ohio and across the nation want to make sure that everyone has access to quality mental healthcare when they need it. Everything we advocate for is centered on helping our loved ones and fellow citizens access this life saving care. From defending the independent practice of psychology and protecting access to care for vulnerable populations – to growing the psychological care workforce and reforming insurance – OPA will continue to work everyday to achieve that goal.”

Learn more about the National Register's SPTA Advocacy Award.

About the National Register of Health Service Psychologists
The National Register of Health Service Psychologists was established in 1974 and is the largest nonprofit credentialing organization for psychologists and psychology doctoral students.
Growing Our Own Psychologists

As a result of the need for more psychologists, Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) and the Service Employee International Union District 1199 (SEIU) have signed a Letter of Agreement that creates a program that can take students enrolled in an accredited psychology program and give them a career path to become a fully licensed Psychologist.

To become a psychologist, an individual needs to finish their advanced studies at their university, successfully complete a year-long pre-doctoral internship, and work a specified number of post-doctoral hours under supervision in addition to taking the licensing examination and, in Ohio, an oral examination on state laws. This agreement will assist students in completing these final steps with the potential to move seamlessly into a psychologist role. Our Psychology Assistant I will be akin to a pre-doctoral internship. After they obtain their degree, the Psychology Assistant I will progress to a Psychology Assistant II, which will be their post-doctoral fellowship. These hours vary, depending on the status of their academic institution and internship.

The State of Ohio and OhioMHAS needs licensed psychologists in their state psychiatric hospitals to provide services for our seriously mentally ill patients. In addition to providing treatment to our civil patients, psychologists are key to helping those forensic patients who are hospitalized for legal reasons, such as competency restoration, those unrestorable to competence, and individuals having been acquitted by Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity – NGRI. Forensic evaluations and risk assessments are completed by agency psychologists throughout a patient’s stay and are prime players in moving patients through their treatment and back into the community. This program will aid in building our psychology staff to improve our effective use of our beds. Individuals that choose participate in this recruitment program at one of Ohio’s six state psychiatric hospitals will receive valuable training and experience with serious and complicated mental health concerns which will advance their skills in treatment and assessment, all while earning the benefits of being a State of Ohio employee.

The Psychological Assistant I and Psychological Assistant II positions are term limited to two years each and will be under the supervision of a licensed psychologist at one of the state regional psychiatric hospitals (RPHs). These employees are entitled to union representation, pay increases, contractual benefits, and medical insurance. At the end of the two-year period, the employee will advance to the next step for their licensure, be terminated, or continue in the same position if agreed upon by both parties. After completion of the post-doctoral fellowship, the employee will need to be licensed in order to be reclassified as a psychologist.

Download program informational flyer.

For more information, visit careers.ohio.gov or scan the QR code.

In the past few weeks we’ve heard from many of you, sharing your thoughts and wondering what OPA is doing to help Ohio psychologists navigate through these complex and chaotic times.

I want to assure you that we hear your questions and concerns. I’d also like to reassure all of you that OPA’s mission and values have not changed. We remain committed to our mission: To advance the creation, communication and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and to improve people’s lives in Ohio.

In addition, we focus all our efforts on our two primary strategic goals:

To promote the mental health and wellness of all Ohioans

To support evidence-based Psychology and the professional interest of Ohio Psychologists

The Board of Directors takes these goals seriously and works tirelessly to further these goals. Every year, hundreds of Ohio psychologists volunteer as committee chairs, committee members and board members. Everything we do, from our committee projects and initiatives to our advocacy efforts at the statehouse, are intended to further these goals. Through our partnerships and relationships with other members of the mental health community we have supported legislation to protect evidence-based practice, and we have advocated for laws that will improve access to care. We are planning a webinar to share even more information about our efforts, especially as they pertain to more recent events. We hope to announce the date and time soon.

It is important to know that we view our journey as a marathon, not a sprint. Many of our activities take a great deal of time and effort to realize results, but one thing we know for sure: we are stronger when our voices are unified!

We can use your energy and support. If you are not a member of OPA, please consider joining us.

The Ohio Psychological Association’s Science and Research Committee (SRC) promotes scientific endeavors of psychologists in Ohio while also advocating for ongoing research and application of research findings for members, students, and psychology allies. The Committee focuses on both psychological research and evidence based clinical work and seeks to represent psychological science and scientists.

In the past, SRC members have supported the next generation of psychologists by managing the solicitation, selection and judging of posters that are presented by graduate students in psychology at the OPA Convention; being involved in the review of both Institutional Review Board (IRB) and grant submissions to OPA and participating in the annual judging of The Ohio Academy of Science’s “Science Day” programs. The group has also generated new ideas including subject matter expert consultation groups, and assistance with research.

Most recently, the committee has begun to consider Artificial Intelligence (AI), and will be sponsoring some OPA workshops on the use of AI in psychology including note writing and manuscript preparation

Membership and involvement in the Science Committee offers the opportunity for professional development in terms of the committee’s initiatives and activities. It is an opportunity for early career psychologists (ECPs)to become familiar with the mechanisms of the science committee and of the larger OPA. Membership is also an opportunity for ECPs to develop or further their research ideas. The Committee offers the opportunity for creativity in generating initiatives, new offerings, and ways to offer the support of psychological science to the larger membership.

The Science Committee is welcoming new members. The committee meets once a month, and looks forward to hearing from you.

Email Dr. F.
